Wildlife attractions in South Africa
Boasting some of the most famous African wildlife parks and conservancies on the continent, South Africa is home and refuge to one of the worlds richest and most diverse communities of animal life. The world famous Big 5 species, which includes, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, Buffalo and Lion are found within most of South Africa’s game parks. However, it is not all about the ‘giants’ of our game parks that attract such universal following. The site of watching Kudu rutting on the plains of the Umfolozi veld, or of Crocodiles hunting in the rivers of the Kruger National Park, all add to the unique experience of viewing African wildlife.
The weather plays an important part in the sighting of game. Game viewing is easiest in the winter, but some connoisseurs prefer the lush vegetation of summer. The months of March and April see the dramatic rutting of Impala, Wildebeest and other species, whilst November and December sees the birth of their young.
Pioneers in conservation, South Africans have forged a network of National and Parks and Private Game Parks now occupies almost 12% of its country’s land. The growing interest among visitors to these establishments has seen the popularity for wildlife safaris increase substantially. Highly qualified tour operators are able to offer great insight into the behaviour and mannerisms of a variety of game species, as well as safari companies offering numerous activities including Rhino tracking, Elephant Monitoring and night game drives. Guided trails by operators and trackers allows visitors, to some of Africa’s finest game reserves, the unique opportunity of getting close up to numerous animal species, including Big 5.
